Prevention
The old saying holds up: prevention really is better than a cure, and nowhere more so than with growing teeth. Our whole approach to children's dentistry is built around preventive care and regular monitoring, so small concerns get spotted before they become big ones.
At each visit we give your child's teeth a thorough, gentle cleaning to clear away the plaque and trapped food that a toothbrush at home can miss. Paired with steady brushing and flossing between visits, those regular appointments go a long way toward helping your child avoid uncomfortable and costly restorative treatment later on.
Just as important, friendly visits from an early age help children build a positive relationship with their dental team, the kind that encourages them to look after their teeth for life. And because we care about the world those little smiles grow up in, our office runs green and completely paperless.
Your first line of defence is at home
Dr. Anu recommends brushing twice a day, for at least two minutes each time. A consistent cleaning routine at home is the front line against cavities and gingivitis, and it is where most of the battle is won.
It matters more than many parents realize. Cavities bring pain, sensitivity and general discomfort, and young children often find those feelings hard to put into words. Preventing that situation is far kinder than treating it.
Extra layers of protection
The Canadian and American academies of pediatric dentistry (CAPD and AAPD) recommend fluoride varnish twice a year to help greatly reduce the chances of tooth decay. It is a quick step that can be done during a regular visit.
Back teeth are full of little pits and grooves where food and plaque like to settle in. A sealant covers those areas with a thin protective coat, helping keep decay from getting started where the brush struggles to reach.
For sports and wheeled adventures like biking, a mouthguard helps protect teeth from injury. If you would like to know more about a fitted mouthguard for your child, reach out to Dr. Anu through our contact page.
Dr. Anu Korada
Dr. Anu trained in the UK and moved to Canada from London with her family. A mother of two herself, she brings more than 15 years of experience in pediatric and special care dentistry across Canada and the UK, and she teaches pediatric dentistry at UBC and BC Children's Hospital.
She believes good oral hygiene is the gateway to good overall general health, and that baby teeth deserve real care: they support the growing jaw and face, and they hold the space adult teeth will need. Her favourite part of the job is making the dental chair a comfortable place where kids learn to feel good about their teeth.
